APU’s small size and extraordinary Alaska setting create a deeply personal educational experience—one that encourages students to draw strength from their roots while exploring new horizons.

Valuing Tradition

At APU, education honors traditional ways of knowing and being, including Alaska Native knowledge and cultures. Students from every background are welcomed and encouraged to bring their whole selves to their education. By sharing their cultures, perspectives, and experiences, they help create an inclusive learning community that respects tradition while building understanding for the future.

Learning by Doing

APU students put knowledge into action. They conduct field research, study marine life in the lab, manage real investments, explore Alaska’s backcountry, investigate local ecosystems, and engage with new perspectives across disciplines. This hands-on approach prepares students to apply what they learn in meaningful, real-world ways.

Purpose-Driven and Community-Focused

APU works alongside organizations and communities to address Alaska’s needs and opportunities. Through partnerships and programs connected to health, education, the environment, and the economy, students and faculty contribute to work that makes a lasting difference. From the APU FASTLab to Spring Creek Farm at the Kellogg Campus, APU’s learning and research remain deeply connected to the people and places we serve.
